Yesterday, 18 May 2021, 4 Palestinians, including a child, were killed while 194 others were wounded; 9 of them sustained serious wounds by Israeli Occupation Forces’ (IOF) bullets in the West Bank. During IOF’s suppression of the peaceful protests against the Israeli offensive on Gaza and Jerusalem, three Palestinians, including a child, were killed while the fourth was killed at a military checkpoint. IOF claimed that the latter attempted to carry out a stabbing attack while he did not pose imminent threat or danger to the soldiers’ lives.
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), on Tuesday, 18 May 2021, mass protests took off from the centers of West Bank’s cities and villages towards seam zones and Israeli military checkpoints after a general strike titled ” Dignity” was declared all over the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) in protest against the ongoing Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip and occupied Jerusalem. IOF intervened and suppressed those protests by using excessive force, and clashes that continued until the evening broke out. As a result, 3 civilians, including a child, were killed. Also, IOF’s suppression of protestors in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Nablus, Tubas, Tulkarm, occupied East Jerusalem, Jericho, Qalqilya, Jenin, and Salfit resulted in the injury of 194 Palestinians, including 3 journalists. Among those injured, 9 were in critical condition.
Moreover, IOF opened fire at protestors at the northern entrance to al-Bireh, where al-Mahkama military checkpoint is established, at the entrance to “Beit El” settlement. As a result, 74 Palestinians were injured. Among those injured were: Mohammed Mohammed Ishaq Humaid (25), from al-Bireh, who was shot with a live bullet in his chest, and Adham Fayiz Mousa Kashif (21), from Um al-Sharayit neighborhood in al-Bireh, who was shot with a live bullet in the chest. Both of them were taken to Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, where doctors announced their death, succumbing to their serious wounds. Also, among those wounded, 6 sustained serious wounds.
Furthermore, IOF stationed near the annexation wall in Bil’in village, west of Ramallah, opened fire at Palestinian protestors. As a result, at approximately16:00, Islam Fahmi Dar Naser (14) was shot with a live bullet in his head. Islam was taken to Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, where doctors announced his death at 20:20, succumbing to his critical wounds.
At approximately 11:00, IOF stationed in the Old Vegetable Market in al-Karantina area in Hebron’s Old City opened fire at Islam Ghayyad “Mohammed Haider” Zahdah (32), from Hebron. IOF claimed that he attempted to carry out a stabbing attack and prevented Palestinian ambulances from reaching him.
PCHR strongly condemns IOF’s crime of using excessive force that resulted in the murder of 4 Palestinian civilians and the injury of dozens of others.
PCHR calls upon the international community to take immediate action in order to stop IOF’s crimes and reiterates its call on the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfill their obligations under Article 1; i.e. to respect and ensure respect for the Convention in all circumstances. PCHR emphasizes that the international community’s conspiracy of silence encourages Israel to commit further violations of the international human Rights law and international humanitarian law.
