Girl Killed by Her Brother in Khan Yunis
On Friday, 30 April 2021, Haneen Maher Farouq al-Jabri (19), from Khan Yunis, was pronounced dead upon arrival to Naser Hospital.
According to the police’s initial investigations and information, Haneen and her brother Yousef (16) headed to eat breakfast (Iftar) at their sister’s, Ghada (24) house. At approximately 21:50, while Yousef was playing with a Kalashnikov rifle, which was at Ghadah’s house, a live bullet was accidentally fired from the rifle, wounding Haneen in her head. Haneen was then taken to Naser Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Sources at the Palestinian police told PCHR’s researcher that the police headed to the scene, opened an investigation into the incident and confiscated the rifle. Police sources also stated that initial investigations point out that Haneen was accidentally killed while her brother was playing with the rifle.
PCHR deeply regrets the recurrence of such incidents in the Gaza Strip, and stresses the importance of prescribing strict controls over the possession and use of firearms to protect civilians’ lives and prevent such incidents.
PCHR also calls on the Public Prosecution to seriously investigate the incident to find out its circumstances and bring those responsible to trial.
