Palestinian Civilian Killed by Unknown Persons in Hebron
A Palestinian civilian was killed yesterday after he was shot by unknown persons in Hebron in the West Bank. This incident is part of the state of proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
At approximately 22:00 on Sunday, 21 August 2017, al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron announced the death of Rateb Husain Rateb Abu ‘Asab (26), from Hebron, after he sustained two live bullet wounds to the back and shoulder. Upon a decision from the Attorney General, the victim’s body was referred to Abu Dis Forensic Medicine Institute.
The Palestinian police declared that gunmen opened fire from a machine gun at a toy shop belonging to Rateb’s father in al-Haras area near the City Lights Club and fled away. As a result, Rateb succumbed to serious wounds he sustained. After that, large force of Palestinian security officers arrived at the scene and opened investigation into the incident. However, the police gave no further information.
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns the killing of Rateb Abu ‘Asab and is concerned over the increasing number of victims due to the use of firearms. The last incident was when ‘Essa Qurainat (37) was shot dead while his relative was wounded by unknown persons in Jericho on 20 July 2017. PCHR also calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to put an end to the proliferation of weapons and to maintain the safety and security of civilians.
