Civilian Died by Explosion of Suspicious Object in al-Bureij Refugee Camp
On Sunday, 26 January 2013, Ashraf Thaher
Farajallah (19) was killed after falling on his head and sustaining shrapnel
wounds to the right hand due to the explosion of a suspicious object in
al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. This incident is part of the phenomenon of
the proliferation of weapons in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the
Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 16:30 on Sunday,
26 January 2013, Ashraf Thaher Farajallah from Block 2 in al-Bureij refugee
camp in the central Gaza Strip sustained shrapnel wounds when he mishandled a
mysterious object which exploded on the roof of his relative’s house. According
to the Palestinian police, who opened an investigation into the incident,
Farajallah fell on his head when he went down on the stairs, so he sustained
injuries to the head. Farajallah was
taken by a neighbor’s car to Shuhadaa’ al-Aqsa hospital in Deir el-Balah to
receive medical treatment, and was then transferred to Shifa Hospital in Gaza
City for head injury treatment. Medical
sources at the hospital announced his death after two hours.
PCHR is concerned over the increasing number of
casualties resulting from the misuse of weapons, which is part of the state of
proliferation of weapons and assaults against the rule of law. PCHR calls upon the government in Gaza to take
necessary measures to ensure the non-recurrence of such incidents.
