Man Dies after Sustaining Injuries due to an Internal Explosion in Nablus

 Field Update

On
Sunday, 25 May 2014, ‘Amid Salim ‘Akkubah (23) from the Old City in Nablus died
after sustaining injuries due to an international explosion that rocked Nablus
Market in the north of the West Bank.  This
incident is part of the phenomenon of the proliferation of weapons in the
occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According
to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR),
on Sunday evening, 27 May 2014, medical sources at Rafidiah Governmental
Hospital in Nablus declared the death of ‘Amid ‘Akkubah after sustaining injuries
last Thursday when an internal explosion rocked in the City Market. On
Thursday, 22 May 2014, an explosion occurred in “al-Khan” Market in the Old
City.  As a result, ‘Akkubah was
seriously wounded and then taken to receive medical treatment in Rafidiah
Hospital.  Moreover, 3 stores caught fire
causing severe deep damages to them.

The
Palestinian police arrived at the area and opened an investigation into the
circumstances of this incident.

PCHR
condemns this incident, which is part of the state of proliferation of weapons
and assaults against the rule of law in the oPt.  PCHR calls upon the government in Gaza to
take necessary measures to protect civilians and spare them the dangers arising
from weapons and suspicious objects.
