Two Children Injured Explosion of Suspicious Object in al-Zaitoun Neighborhood in Gaza

Field Update

On Wednesday, 13 May 2015, two children from al-Zaitoun
neighborhood in the east of Gaza City were injured as they played with a
suspicious object in front of their houses. This incident is part of the state
of security chaos, proliferation of weapons and assaults on the rule of law in
the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for
Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 19:15, on Wednesday, 13 May 2015, two
children were injured due to the explosion of a suspicious object they were
playing with near their houses in al-Zaitoun neighborhood in Gaza City. Haitham
Ahmed Sa’id Hasanain (16), sustained shrapnel wounds to the right hand and left
eye, and his cousin Haidar Mohammed Hasanain (9), sustained shrapnel wounds
throughout his body. According to Haitham Hasanain, who was injured in the
explosion, he found a metal object with 2 wires coming out of it in a nearby
agricultural land. He took it with him and started playing with it in front of
his house. That object exploded and injured him and his cousin Haidar who was
around.

According to PCHR’s investigations, the two children were injured
due to the explosion of
an explosive detonator.

PCHR condemns this incident and calls upon the
Attorney General to investigate it. PCHR also calls upon the competent
authorities to take the necessary measures to protect civilians from the risks
of weapons and explosive objects.
