PCHR Organizes 3 Meetings on Political Participation in the Palestinian Society

Ref: 23/2012

The Democratic Development Unit (DDU) of the Palestinian Center for
Human Rights (PCHR) has organized 3 meetings on political participation, in
cooperation with local NGOs in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip.

On Wednesday morning, 29 February 2012, a meeting was organized in
cooperation with the Palestinian Female Graduates Association.  It was held in the association’s office in Gaza
City, and was attended by 18 members of the association.  Mohammed Abu Hashem, a human rights activist,
presented a working paper on Democracy and political participation in the
Palestinian society.  The participants
then discussed the importance of political participation in a democratic
society, women’s political participations and mechanisms of defending the right
to political participation.  On Tuesday,
28 February 2012, another meeting was held in the association’s office on the
same subject.  The meeting was attended
by 21 members of the association.

Also on Tuesday, a meeting was organized in cooperation with the
Palestinian Commission for Development and Environment Protection.  The meeting was held in the commission’s
office in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahia, and was attended by 33
members of the commission.  Mohammed Abu
Hashem, a human rights activist, presented a working paper on Democracy and
political participation in the Palestinian society.

These meetings are part of a 3-year project funded by the European
Union and Oxfam Novib, whose goal is to improve awareness and respect of human
rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.  Such meetings are part of
persistent efforts made by PCHR to promote democratic awareness in the
Palestinian community under the lack of the Palestinians’ confidence in the
democratic process due to the political fragmentation and its
consequences.
