Field Update

One Killed and Five Injured, including Three Children, in Incidents involving the Misuse of Weapons in the Gaza Strip

Over the past two days in the Gaza Strip, Ahmad Thari from Jabalia town was killed and five civilians were injured, including three children, in incidents involving the misuse of weapons.

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:25 on Monday, 5 June 2006, Ahmad Ibrahim Mohammad Thari (33), a senior member in the Izzedeen El-Qassam Brigades, was killed by an explosive device he had been preparing in a room on the roof of his house, located in Haifa Street in Jabalia.  He was killed instantly and his body was taken to Shifa Hospital.  The explosion destroyed the room where Thari was working.  In addition, a woman and a child were injured:

-         Maryam Ahmad Assaf (50) sustained shrapnel injuries all over her body and was taken to Shifa Hospital, where her condition was described as moderate; and

-         Izzat Yousef Thari (4) sustained shrapnel injuries to the head and was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital, where his injuries were described as minor.

At approximately 22:30 on Sunday, 4 June 2006, Mohammad Khaled Abu Ma’rouf, a 10-year-old resident of Khan Yunis was admitted into Naser Hospital.  He had been injured by a bullet to the left leg, while he was near his house in Joret El-Luot area south of Khan Yunis.  The source of the shot is not known.

Also on the same day and at approximately 22:00, Ahmad Abdel Hamid Kollab, a 24-year-old resident of Khan Yunis refugee camp, was admitted into Naser Hospital in Khan Yunis.  He had been injured by a bullet to the right thigh.  The bullet had been accidentally fired from a firearm mishandled by one of his brothers.  His condition was described as moderate.

And at approximately 02:05 on Sunday, Salah Mahmoud El-Astal was injured by a superficial bullet wound to the head.  He was injured while he was on Salah El-Deen Road in Khan Yunis.  The source of the shot is not known.  He was taken to Naser Hospital for treatment.

PCHR is gravely concerned over the continued number of deaths and injuries resulting from the misuse of weapons, which has become a prominent feature of the ongoing security chaos in the region.  The Centre calls upon the Palestinian National Authority to take preventive measures to prevent such incidents and safeguard the safety of citizens.
