Two Persons Killed in a Family Dispute in Rafah and a Third One Died from a Previous Injury

Two Palestinians were killed and a third one was injured in a family dispute in Rafah.  One of the victims was murdered inside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City after he had been also attacked inside Gaza European Hospital as he was receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 19:05 on Thursday, 23 March 2006, a person stabbed Fathi Salem Abu Jamous, 38, into the heart, Abu Jamous was in front of his house in al-Shaboura refugee camp in Rafah.  He was stabbed in the context of a family dispute.  He was evacuated to Martyr Mohammed Yousef al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah, but medical efforts to save his life failed.  As one of the victim's relatives heard him screaming, he chased Mohammed Hasan Hassan (Mabrad), 24, and his cousin Mohammed Hussein Hassan (Mabrad), 18, and fired at them from his personal pistol.  They were injured to the legs.  They were evacuated to the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Yunis.  At approximately 20:00, armed persons attacked the hospital and broke into the room, where Mohammed Hasan Hassan (Mabrad) was receiving medical treatment.  They fired at him, injuring him with 4 live bullets to the abdomen.  He was transferred to the intensive care unit at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.  At approximately 06:00 on Friday, 24 March 2006, two persons broke into the hospital and one of them fired at Hassan.  He was hit by a live bullet to the head.  He died nearly one hour and a half later.

It is worth noting that it was not the first time that people being killed inside hospitals.  In the past, some people were killed inside hospitals in the Gaza Strip, but no measures were taken to stop such attacks.

On Saturday, 25 March 2006, medical sources at Ekhilov Hospital inside Israel declared that Mefleh Joma'a Abu Hujayer, 61, from Juhor al-Dik area, south of Gaza City, died from an injury to the chest.  Abu Hujayer was injured by a live bullet to the chest in a family dispute in al-Mughraqa village, south of Gaza City, on 13 March 2006.  He was transferred to Ekhilove Hospital inside Israel as he was in a serious condition.

PCHR is concerned about the continuation of internal violence, and the use of weapons in personal and family disputes. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to provide protection to public institutions, including hospitals.  PCHR calls also upon the PNA, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these attacks, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
