Security Chaos and Proliferation of Small Arms

Armed Personal and Clan Clashes

Field Update

14 November 2006

2 Women Killed, including one that was 7-months pregnant, and a child injured by gunmen in Beit Lahia

On Monday, 13 November 2006, two women from Juha clan were killed and a child from the same clan was injured by gunmen in the town of Beit Lahia in the north of the Gaza Strip, in yet another incident of security chaos.

PCHR's preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 16:30 on Monday, three gunmen got out of a car and stormed the house of Zeinat Faris Juha (45) located near the compound of the Preventive Security Apparatus in the Mansheyya area in Beit Lahia. At gunpoint, the gunmen requested that the woman accompany them. The household confronted the gunmen, who fired at the people in the house, and fled.

The shooting resulted in the death of Zeinat's daughter, Jehan Mohammad Juha (26), who was 7-months pregnant. Jehan was hit by several bullet in the chest and abdomen, and was pronounced dead upon arrival in Shifa Hospital. Zeintat Juha was injured by several bullets in her body; and a second daughter, Nihad (16), was injured by a bullet in the left leg. The injured were taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital, where Zeinat died later of her wounds.

Police sources indicated that the incident was motivated by clan disputes, and that an investigation was launched.

PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims in armed personal and clan clashes, which is part of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). The Centre reiterates the call to the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to seriously investigate these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
