2 Palestinians Killed in Armed Clan Clashes in Gaza and Nuseirat

Ayman Mahmoud Abu Toha, a 38-year old resident of Beach Refugee Camp in Gaza City, was killed yesterday by a bullet to the chest when he attempted to break up a clan clash in the refugee camp. And two days ago, Haidar Mustafa Ali Mahdi, a 75-year old resident of Nuseirat Refugee Camp, was killed by bullets fired at his house on the backdrop of a financial dispute involving his son.

PCHR's preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:15 on Saturday, 9 September 2006, a dispute erupted between Abu Hatab and Absi "El-Danaf" clans in Market Street in Beach Camp. The dispute escalated into an armed confrontation. As a result, Ayman Abu Toha was hit by a bullet that penetrated his right side and issued from his chest. He was killed instantly. Abu Toha was trying to break up the dispute. In addition, two others were injured:

-         Anwar Sa'id El-Absi "El-Danaf" (31) was injured by a bullet in the lower back; and

-         Jamal El-Absi "El-Danaf" (35) was injured by a bullet in the abdomen.

The injured were taken to Shifa Hospital, where their injuries were listed as moderate.

At approximately 02:00 on Friday, 8 September 2006, Haidar Mahdi was killed when an armed group fired several bullets at his house in Bloc 2 of Nuseirat Refugee Camp in the center of the Gaza Strip. Mahdi was hit by several bullets to the feet, thighs and back. He was taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where he died shortly after admittance. Neighbors stated that the shots were fired on the backdrop of a financial dispute between the shooters and one of Haidar's sons.

PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims due to use of arms in personal and clan disputes, which is a part of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Centre calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to seriously investigate these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
