Security Chaos and Proliferation of Small Arms

Armed Personal and Clan Clashes

Field Update

6 September 2006

3 Palestinians Injured, including a Child, in 2 Clan Disputes in Nuseirat and Khan Yunis

PCHR's preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:30 on Tuesday, 5 September 2006, a dispute broke out between Abu Oreiban and Abu Dalal clans in Nuseirat refugee camp in the central part of the Gaza Strip. The dispute escalated into an armed clash between the two sides. The shooting resulted in moderately injuring 2 bystanders, who were treated at Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir El-Balah. The injured are:

-         Jihad Khalil El-Assar (17) was injured by gunshot shrapnel in the left foot; and

-         Mohammad Mustafa El-Masri (23) was injured by a bullet in the left thigh.

At approximately 17:30 on the same day, Shadi Isam Ferwana (25) was admitted to Naser Hospital in Khan Yunis suffering from a moderate bullet wound in the lower back. Ferwana was injured as he passed near the site of a clan dispute in Abu Oweili Street, branching from Jamal Abdel Nasser Street in El-Satar El-Gharbi area in Khan Yunis.

PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims due to use of arms in personal and clan disputes, which is a part of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Centre calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to seriously investigate these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
