Palestinian Killed and a Child Injured by Misuse of Weapons in Rafah and Tulkarm

On Monday evening (14 August 2006) a resident of the town of Illar, north of Tulkarm, was killed; and a child was injured in Rafah, in incidents categorized as misuse of weapons. These incidents are part of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).

PCHR's preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 17:00, Mohammad Mo'een Fayez Jeebat, a 24-year old resident of Illar, was killed as he was inside his grocery store in the town. He was hit by a bullet to the heart. The bullet was accidentally fired from a pistol mishandled by an 18-year old in the store.

It is noted that Jeebat is the second victim of misuse of weapons in less than 24 hours. Yesterday, Tamer Anwar Hilles was killed by a bullet to the chest fired from a mishandled weapon.

At approximately 18:00, the child Abdel Rahman Abdel Hamid Es'efan (14) was admitted to Mohammad Yousef El-Najjar Hospital in Rafah. He was injured by a bullet in the right foot as he was sitting in front of the house of one of his relatives in Egypt Street in J'neina Quarter in Rafah. The bullet was accidentally fired by a gunmen walking in the street.

PCHR is extremely concerned over the continued falling of victims by misuse of weapons by armed groups and individuals, which are a continuum of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Centre calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to seriously investigate these incidents and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
