Security Chaos and Proliferation of Weapons
Misuse of Weapons by Armed Groups and Security Forces
Field Update
30 Jul 2006
A Palestinian Killed in Khan Yunis and another One Wounded in Rafah in Two Separate Incidents of Misuse of Weapons
At approximately 02:30 on Saturday, 29 July 2006, the body of Wassim Ahmed Baraka Abu Daqqa, 22, from al-Fukhari area in the east of Khan Yunis, was brought to Nasser Hopsital in Khan Yunis. The victim, who was a university student and a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Fatah movement, was hit by a live bullet to the abdomen.
According to investigations conducted by PCHR and testimonies stated by the victims relatives, he was conducting night watching to discover any possible Israeli incursion into the area, when a live bullet was unintentionally unleashed from his colleagues gun and hit him.
Earlier, at approximately 00:40 on the same day, Ahmed Hamdan Abu Shaar, 27, was wounded by a live bullet to the head from an unknown source, when he was walking near the central market in Rafah. He was evacuated to Martyr Mohammed Yousef al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah. Medical sources described his wound as moderate.
PCHR is gravely concerned over increasing incidents of misuse of weapons by armed Palestinian groups and individuals, which is part of the security chaos plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
