On
Sunday evening, 20 January, Marwan Awad El-Gharabli from Sheja’eya Quarter in
Gaza City was killed and two others were injured in an armed clan clash between
members of El-Gharabli and Abu Amr clans.
PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 13:30 on
Sunday, 20 January, a fistfight between members of El-Gharabli and Abu Amr clans
broke out near Al-Azhar University in Gaza City. It escalated into an armed
clash using firearms and grenades. As a result, Marwad Awad El-Gharabli (24)
from Sheja’eya Quarter was killed by shrapnel to the body. Ahmad Salim Abu Amr
(23) was injured by a bullet to the neck and shrapnel to the legs; and his
brother Mohammad (21) was injured by shrapnel to the hands and feet. The injured
were taken to Shifa hospital where their injuries were light to moderate. The
Police stated that they broke up the dispute and arrested several people from
both clans.
And
on 17 January 2008, Salem Odeh Madi (45) from Rafah was killed by members of his
clan in an old vendetta killing. The Police stated that that an investigation
was opened, and that a suspect was arrested.
PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims in armed personal and
clan clashes, which is a continuation of the security chaos plaguing the OPT.
The Centre reiterates the call toe the Palestinian National Authority,
represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these crimes and prosecute
the perpetrators.
