Toddler Killed and another Child Injured by Gunfire in the Gaza Strip

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 15:30 on Wednesday, 1 August 2007, May Mesbah Shalha (2.5-year old female) was hit by a bullet in the top of her head from an unknown source. She was playing in her house’s garden in Bukhari area to the east of Jabalia refugee camp. She was taken to El-Awda Hospital in the refugee camp. She was immediately transferred to Shifa Hospital due to the severity of the injury. However efforts to save her life failed; and she was pronounced dead at approximately 18:00. The girl’s father informed PCHR’s fieldworker that his daughter was playing beside him and his wife in their house’s garden. Suddenly she screamed. They rushed to her and saw severe bleeding from her head. They took her immediately to the hospital. The father stated that he did not hear any gunshots, and that the area was completely quiet.

And at approximately 19:00 on Tuesday, 31 July 2007, the child Hasan Mohammad El-Sayyed (12) was injured by a bullet from an unknown source. The injury was in the left shoulder, and occurred as the child was walking near his house in Canada Quarter in Rafah. The child was taken to Mohammad Yusef El-Najjar Hospital for treatment. Sources at the hospital stated that the bullet entered through the shoulder from above and rested in the chest. The child’s condition was listed as moderate. The child, in the presence of his father, informed PCHR’s fieldworker that he did not hear any gunshots when he was injured. However he stated that in the past he heard firing from training areas of Palestinian factions in the Mawasi area to the west of Rafah, less than 1 kilometer from his house. Security sources in the Executive Force indicated that they accepted the child’s version of events; and that no investigation was opened.

PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims by misuse of weapons. The Centre reiterates the call for the PNA to seriously investigate such incidents, to prosecute the perpetrators, and to take effective actions to stop the recurrence of such incidents.
