Secondary School Exam Rooms Closed by Al-Aqsa Martyrs Gunmen in Nablus

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 9:30 on Saturday, 7 July 2007, a group of 20 gunmen from Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah, closed secondary school exam rooms in Amr Bin El-As and Salaheya schools in Nablus. The gunmen were protesting that no safe exam rooms were provided for them since they are wanted by Israel. The gunmen fired inside the two schools, and broke into exam halls. They confiscated test sheets from students. And at approximately 11:00, the Directorate of Education in Nablus opened a new exam  hall in Abdel Rahim Jardana School, and announced that students deprived of taking their exams can take them in this school.

A teacher in Amr Bin El-As school gave the following statement to PCHR’s fieldworker, “At approximately 9:30 on the first day of secondary school exams for repetition exams, a group from Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades of Fatah came to the school where I work as an exam monitor. The gunmen asked the director of the exam center to provide them with a special room to take their exams. When the director did not comply, the gunmen went out to the school yard and shot in the air. They told the students not to take the exams and get out of the exam rooms. When the students did not comply, the gunmen broke into the rooms and confiscated exam papers from students, and forced them out of the rooms at gunpoint.”

PCHR is concerned over this attack, which constitutes a continuation of the security chaos in the OPT. The Centre calls upon the PNA, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
