Palestinian Killed and 6 Injured in Armed Clash between the Police and Suspected Drug Dealers in Jabalia Refugee Camp

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:10 on Saturday, 9 June 2007, an armed clash broke out between suspected drug dealers and members of the narcotics department of the Police in Jabalia refugee camp. The clash erupted when the police attempted to apprehend the suspects. The Police surrounded the house where the suspected where barricaded; and exchanged fire with them for nearly an hour. Members of the Interior Ministry Executive Force provided support to the Police during the clash. Nafiz Khalil Abu Daher (54), a gunman in the house, was killed by a bullet to the chest. Six others were injured, including a policeman and 2 bystanders. One of the bystanders was a 3-year old boy seriously injured by a bullet in the head.

PCHR stresses the importance of taking legal action against criminals, and of the need to combat escalating crime as part of the ongoing security chaos plaguing the OPT. Simultaneously, the Centre stresses the need for law-enforcement personnel to adhere to regulations when they perform their duty.
