Clashes between Armed Groups and Security Forces

Seven Injured, including 2 Children, in 2 Incidents in the Gaza Strip

Five Palestinians, including 2 children, were injured yesterday in renewed clashes between Fatah and Hamas gunmen in the town of Beit Hanoun. And in another incident, 2 members of the National Security Force were injured by shots fired by unknown gunmen east of Gaza City.

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:20 on Wednesday, 24 January 2007, armed clashed broke out between members of Fatah on the one hand and the Executive Force and Hamas members on the other, in the town of Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip. The clashes continued till 12:30, and resulted in the injury of 5 people. The injured included 2 members of Fatah from El-Kafarna clan and 3 civilian bystanders, including 2 children. The injured are:

-         Mohammad Taha El-Kafarna (33), injured by a bullet in the left foot;

-         Yehya Khader Obeid (El-Kafarna), (30), injured by a bullet in the left foot;

-         Sa’di Mohammad E’khrawat (13), injured by bullet shrapnel in the right hand;

-         Fadi Jamil E’khrawat (10), injured by a bullet in the left foot; and

-         Mohammad Ata El-Akhras (45), injured by a bullet in the left hand;

In a related development, gunmen from El-Kafarna clan fired shots in the vicinity of Kamal Naser Hospital for nearly 90 minutes. No injuries were reported.

At approximately 22:10 in the evening of the same day, unknown gunmen fired at a National Security Force outpost east of Gaza City. Two members of the Force were injured by shots in their feet. The injured are: Mohammad Farid Mousa (20) and Saqer Nimr Hirz (23). Both are residents of Gaza City.

PCHR is concerned over the continued falling of victims due to the use of arms by armed individuals and groups. This is a continuum of the security chaos plaguing the OPT. the Centre calls upon the PNA, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
