Field Update

13 May 2007

2 Palestinians Killed and 6 Injured including a Woman in Clashes in the Gaza Strip

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:30 on Sunday, 13 May 2007, three unknown gunmen traveling in a car fired at Baha Mousa Abu Jarad (34) from Beit Lahia and an activist in Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah. Abu Jarad was traveling in a pick up truck at the time, and was on his way home. He was hit by a bullet to the chest; and was rushed to Kamal Odwan Hospital for treatment. From there he was transferred to Shifa Hospital due to the severity of the injury. He died of his wounds shortly afterwards.

In the aftermath of the shooting, gunmen from Abu Jarad clan and Fatah spread in the area of the attack and fired indiscriminately. Tawfiq Mohammad El-Baddi (36) was injured by a bullet in the neck as he stood near his house. He was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital for treatment. Then he was transferred to Shifa Hospital due to the severity of the injury. He died of his wound.

In another development, unknown gunmen fired at Adel Aqel, a Hamas activist in Beit Lahia, as he was walking near Kamal Odwan Hospital. Aqel was not hit. However, Ata Matar Freij (49) was injured by a bullet in the back. He was taken to Kamal Odwan Hospital for treatment; and then transferred to Shifa Hospital due to the severity of the injury.

It is noted that at approximately 2:30 on Friday, 11 May 2007, armed clashes erupted between members of the National Security Forces and members of Izzedeen El-Qassam Battalions, the armed wing of Hamas, in Jala intersection in Wehda Street in Gaza City. The clashes spread to Jamal Abdel Naser Street to the south, and continued for nearly an hour and half. Five people were injured:

-         Mo’een Mousa Kreizem (40), a member of the National Security Force moderately injured by a bullet in the pelvis.

-         Husam Mahmoud Ahmad (31), a member of the National Security Force seriously injured by bullets in the feet.

-         Mohammad Mahmoud Jendeyya (25), member of Izzedeen El-Qassam Battaltions moderately injured by a bullet in the right hand.

-         Hana Sami Zahra (23), a female bystander moderately injured by shrapnel in the left eye.

-         Majed Ahmad Qalaja (19), a bystander moderately injured by a bullet in the right shoulder.

The injured were taken to Shifa Hospital for treatment.

PCHR is extremely concerned over these attacks that occur despite the state of calm over the past weeks. The Centre calls upon all involved parties to respect this state of calm, to resort to dialogue, and to refrain from the use of violence in resolving disputes.
