6 Palestinians, Including a Child, Wounded Due to the Misuse of Weapons

In the past two days, 6 Palestinians, including a child, have been wounded in separate incidents related to the misuse of weapons, which is part of the state of security chaos and proliferation of weapons in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR:

At approximately 00:25 on Sunday, 13 May 2007, Ahmed Hilal Jouhar, 21, from Nusairat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, was admitted into al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, as he was wounded by 2 gunshots to the abdomen and the left hand. Unknown gunmen fired at him when he was near his house. The police initiated an investigation into the attack.

At approximately 23:15 on Saturday, 12 May 2007, unknown gunmen fired at Baker ‘Abdul ‘Aziz ‘Aziz, 50, from al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City, while he was traveling in his car in al-Nafaq Street in the east of the city. He was wounded by a gunshot to the left foot, and the gunmen took his car.

At approximately 17:00 on Friday, 11 May 2007, 4-year-old Nour Ra’ed Zahra, was admitted into Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, as she was wounded by a gunshot to the face that came from an unknown source when she was at home in al-Nasser neighborhood in the north of the city.

At approximately 01:30 on the same day, Baker Hmaid ‘yash, 31, a member of the Palestinian National Security Forces, was admitted into al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, as he was wounded by a gunshot to the left foot. According to one of his colleagues, he was wounded when he mishandled his gun while on duty.

Earlier, at approximately 00:30, a number of gunmen intercepted a civilian car, in which 3 persons were traveling, near offices of the Palestinian Telecommunication Company in Beit Lahia – al-Falouja Street in the northern Gaza Strip. They checked the three persons and then ordered them to leave the area. As soon as the car moved, the gunmen fired at it, wounding 2 persons:

1)      Wa’el Mahmoud Abu Hmaidan, 29, wounded by a gunshot to the back; and

2)      Zaid Ahmed ‘Elwan, 57, wounded by a gunshot to the left foot.

According to Abu Hmaidan, a group of the al-Qassam Brigades (the armed wing of Hamas) visited him at the hospital and apologized for the attack, which took place by mistake.

PCHR is gravely concerned over increasing casualties resulting from the misuse of weapons. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these incidents and bring those who are found responsible to justice.
