Gunmen Storm the Campus of Al-Aqsa University in Gaza

On Monday morning, 7 May 2007, a number of armed members of a clan broke into the campus of al-Aqsa University in Gaza City. They violently beat a young man and abducted a guard of the campus.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 11:30 on Monday, 7 May 2007, a number of gunmen from a clan in Gaza City broke into the campus of al-Aqsa University in al-Remal neighborhood in the west of Gaza City, when two young men sheltered in the campus fleeing from them. The gunmen opened fire inside the campus, terrifying students. They captured one of the young men who sheltered in the campus and attacked him with sharp tools. He was injured in the face, the neck and the hands. When the guards of the campus attempted to stop the gunmen, those gunmen kidnapped one of the guards, Ziad al-Masri, 31, from Beit Hanoun town.

PCHR strongly condemns this latest attack, which is part of the state of security chaos and proliferation of weapons plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate this and other attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
