Using Weapons in Personal and Family Disputes

Field Update

26 April 2007

A Woman Killed and 5 Persons Wounded in a Family Dispute in al-Boreij

 On Wednesday, 25 April 2007, a woman was killed and 3 others and a child were wounded in an armed family dispute in al-Boreij refugee camp. A 5th person was later wounded in the same context.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 16:00 on Wednesday, 25 April 2007, a dispute between the families of Mayat and Hamdan in al-Boreij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip developed into an exchange of fire between the two families. As a result, 3 woman and a child were wounded:

1)      Suzan ‘Ali Mayat (al-Habeel), 30, seriously wounded by a gunshot to the chest (she was pronounced dead at 21:00);

2)      Baraa’ Mazen ‘Olayan, 14, wounded by shrapnel to the right thigh;

3)      Aamena Yousef Mayat, 70, wounded by a gunshot to the left leg; and

4)      Hiba Hussein Mayat, 20, wounded by a gunshot to the right forearm.

Later, Hani Nemer Mayat, 27, was admitted into al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, as he was wounded by a gunshot to the right foot when the two families resumed the exchange of fire.

PCHR is gravely concerned over the continued use of weapons in personal and family disputes, which is further aggravating the state of security chaos in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these attacks and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
