Field Update

16 April 2007

Two Persons Killed and a Child and a Woman Wounded by Unknown Gunmen in Khan Yunis and Gaza

On Sunday evening, 15 April 2007, two persons were shot dead by unknown gunmen in two separate attacks in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Yunis. A child and a woman were also wounded by unknown persons in al-Shati refugee camp in the west of Gaza City.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 18:20 on Sunday, 15 April 2007, Hisham Faraj Kaware’, 34, from Jourat al-Lout neighborhood in Khan Yunis, was admitted into Nasser Hospital in the town as he was seriously wounded by a gunshot to the head. Medical efforts to save his life failed. Unknown gunmen shot Kaware’ when he was in his area of residence. Following the attack, a number of members of the Kaware’ family gathered at Salah al-Din Street in to the east of Khan Yunis and opened fire in protest to the attack.

It is worth noting that Khan Yunis witnessed clan and factional conflicts last February, in which members of the Kaware’ family were involved. (see PCHR’s press release on 25 February 2007)

Also on Sunday evening, some people found a corpse on a tract of agricultural land in al-Mawasi area in the northwest of Khan Yunis. They informed the police. The police, accompanied by an ambulance, arrived at area and evacuated the corpse to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, where he was identified as ‘Essam Dib al-Sakafi, 30, from Khan Yunis. According to medical sources, he was hit by a gunshot to the head. Al-Sakafi was abducted and tortured by an armed group of Ahmed Abu al-Reesh Brigades, an armed wing of Fatah movement, on 25 February 2006. He was also detained and interrogated by the Executive Force of the Ministry of Interior a few weeks ago.

At approximately 00:00 on Monday, 16 April 2007, unknown gunmen traveling in a civilian car without a registration plate fired at Suzan ‘Awadh al-Sa’idi, 40, when she was near her house in al-Shati refugee camp in the west of Gaza City. She was wounded by a gunshot to the left foot. A relative child, 2-year-old Hasan Ahmed al-Sa’idi, was also wounded by a gunshot to the left foot.

PCHR is gravely concerned over increasing casualties resulting from the misuse of weapons. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these incidents and bring those who are found responsible to justice.
