4 Persons Killed in Bloody Family Clashes in Khan Yunis

On Monday, 9 April 2007, 4 persons were killed and two others, including a child, were wounded in armed clashes between clans in Khan Yunis.

According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 13:00 on Monday, 9 April 2007, a quarrel erupted between two persons from the families of Abu Mas’oud and Saqer in Baten al-Sameen area in the southwest of the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Yunis. An hour later, the quarrel developed into armed clashes between the two families, which killed 4 persons, including a bystander:

1)      ‘Awni Ahmed ‘Ali Saqer, 35, hit by several gunshots to the upper part of the body;

2)      Mas’oud ‘Abdul Qader ‘Ouda Abu Mas’oud, 36, hit by a gunshot to the abdomen;

3)      ‘Abdul Raziq ‘Abdul Qader Abu Mas’oud, 51, hit by a gunshot to the abdomen (he died the hospital a few hours later); and

4)      Mohammed (Hamada) ‘Abdul Rahman Jbail Zo’rob, 30, hit by a gunshot to the chest.

As a result of the exchange of fire between the two families, two members of the Z’orob family, including a child, were wounded:

1)      Isma’il ‘Abdul Rahman Zo’rob, 18, wounded by a shrapnel to the head (the deceased bystander’s brother); and

2)      Sameh Mohammed Zo’rob, 12, wounded by a gunshot to the right hand.

All victims were evacuated to Nasser Hospital, whose yards also witnessed an exchange of fire between the two families. No casualties were reported, but the medical staff and patients were extremely terrified.

In the evening, a house belonging to ‘Awni Saqer was burnt in the context of the clashes.

PCHR is gravely concerned over the continuation of the use of weapons in personal and family disputes, which is further aggravating the state of security chaos in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these attacks and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
