2 Internet Cafés Attacked in Rafah & Jabalia

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 1:55 on Monday, 2 April 2007, unknown gunmen detonated an explosive device at the entrance of Salsabeel internet café, owned by Adnan Hussein Adwan (24) in Canada Quarter in Rafah. The explosion caused extensive material damages to the café and destroyed the windows of nearby houses. In addition, the explosion caused damages to the Public Service Association opposite the café, and to the electricity and telephone networks in the area.

It is noted that El-Kas Internet Café in Jabalia refugee camp suffered a similar attack on Saturday, 31 March 2007. The café owner, Mohammad Abu El-Kas, informed PCHR’s fieldworker that unknown assailants detonated a small explosive device at the entrance of the café. The entrance sustained material damages.

PCHR is concerned over the continuation of attacks on internet cafés and audio-video tape stores. Since the beginning of the year, PCHR has document several similar attacks throughout the Gaza Strip. In addition, several owners of internet cafés and audio-video tape stores have received threats demanding that they close their shops before they are attacked.

The Centre condemns these attacks, which are a continuation of the security chaos plaguing the OPT, and calls upon the PNA, represented by the Attorney-General to seriously investigate these crimes and prosecute the perpetrators.
