Field Update

29 March 2007

5 Injured, including a mother and 2 of her children, in an Assassination Attempt against a Commander in Izzedeen El-Qassam Battalions in Gaza City

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 14:20 on Wednesday, 28 March 2007, unknown gunmen traveling in a jeep fired a the vehicle of Eyad Ahmad El-Shinbari (31, from Beit Hanoun), who is a commander in Izzedeen El-Qassam Battalions. El-Shinbari’s wife and two children were with him in the vehicle. The incident took place in Abdel Qadir El-Husseini Street in the center of Gaza City. The targeted car’s occupants were all injured:

-   Eyad El-Shinbari (31), injured by a bullet to the hip and shrapnel to the head and hands;

-   Fatima Ibrahim El-Shinbari (22) injured by a bullet to the head;

-   Ahmad Eyad El-Shinbari (2), injured by shrapnel to the head; and

-   Salah Eyad El-Shinbari (4), injred by a bullet in the left hand.

In his statement to PCHR’s fieldworker, El-Shinbari stated that he managed to flee from the attackers towards nearby houses. The gunmen pursued him and continued to fire at him. However, he escaped, and was taken to Shifa Hospital for treatment.

A bystander, Mohammad Wasim El-Haddad (26), was injured by shrapnel in the abdomen during the attack. He is a resident of Gaza City and works in the Central Elections Commission (CEC). At the time of the attack, he was in the CEC voter registration tent in the nearby Unknown Soldier Park in the center of the city.

All the injured were taken to Shifa Hospital for treatment. Fatima’s condition is serious. She was 6-months pregnant and miscarried as a result of the attack. The other injuries were listed as moderate.

PCHR strongly condemns this crime, and is concerned over the continuation of attacks despite the state of calm reached at the start of February 2007. The Centre calls upon all parties to respect the state of calm, resort to dialogue, and to refrain from resorting to arms in resolving disputes.
