6 Injured in Clashes between Fatah and Hamas in Rafah

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 19:00 on Monday, 26 March 2007, armed clashed broke out between members of Fatah and Hamas in Ibn Siena Street in Tal El-Sultan Quarter in Rafah. The clashes were triggered by a clan dispute, which escalated into an exchange of fire. Masked gunmen were seen on top of roofs and others in alleys. Machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades were used in the clashes, which continued till midnight. Six people were injured, including two bystanders:

-         Ahmad Mohammad Zu’rob (27), injured in the neck; and

-         Saleh Akram El-Mughayer (13), injured in the left hand.

The others injured in the clashes are:

-         Mohammad Mohammad Kabaja (30), injured by a bullet in the right foot;

-         Ayed Awad Afana (39), injured by a bullet in the right hand;

-         Ismail Rashad Ahmad (26), injured by a bullet in the right foot; and

-         Ra’ed Hammad Khafaja 925), injured by shrapnel in the face.

They injured were taken to Abu Yousef El-Najjar Hospital for treatment, where their injuries were listed as moderate.

PCHR is concerned over the repetition of these clashes despite the state of calm. The Centre calls upon all parties to respect this state, to resort to dialogue in resolving differences, and to refrain from resorting to arms under any circumstances.
