Field Update

20 March 2007

Palestinian Killed and 10 Injured, including 4 Women and 4 Children, in an Explosion in Gaza City

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:30 on Monday, 19 March 2007, Ala Mohammad El-Hissi (26), a member of Islamic Jihad, was killed when an explosive device he was preparing exploded in his house in Beach Camp in Gaza City. The explosion occurred in a densely-populated area, and inflicted shrapnel injuries on 10 people, including 4 children and 4 women. El-Hissi’s 2-storey house and two nearby houses belonging to Abu Harb family were destroyed by the explosion. The injured are:

-   Farah Mohammad Abu Harb (3 months old girl);

-   Suheil Khader Abu Harb (2-year boy);

-   Du’a Mohammad el-Hissi (12-year old girl);

-   Hazem Mohammad El-Hissi (16-year old boy);

-   Hussein Abdel Aziz Abu Harb (80-year old man);

-   Sareyya Mahmoud Abu Harb (60-year old woman);

-   Mohammad Hussein Abu Harb (37-year old man);

-   Wedad Hussein Abu Harb (35-year old woman);

-   Afaf Taysir Abu Harb (27-year old woman); and

-   Mona Samir Abu Harb (26-year old woman).

PCHR is extremely concerned over the continuous falling of victims by misuse of weapons, including the preparation and storage of explosives in populated areas. These incidents are an extension of the security chaos plaguing the OPT. The Centre calls upon the PNA to take preventive measures to prevent these incidents and protect people’s security and safety.
