Judge Kidnapped in Jenin

PCHR’s preliminary investigation and the testimony of the victim indicate that at approximately 13:30 on Sunday, 18 March 2007, three unknown gunmen in a white Subaru intercepted Judge Bassam Kamal Hijjawi, who was traveling in his car with two other judges. The incident took place in the Nabatat area on the southern entrance of Jenin. Two gunmen got out of their car and ordered Judge Hijjawi to get into their car. Then they took him to an undisclosed location. At approximately 17:30 on the same day, the kidnappers released Judge Hijjawi after telling him that he was not personally targeted. They told him that as the highest judicial figure in Jenin, his kidnapping was a message to the PNA.

PCHR strongly condemns the kidnapping of Judge Hijjawi of the Initial Proceedings Court in Jenin. This crime is a continuation of the security chaos plaguing the OPT. The Centre renews its call to the PNA, represented by the Attorney-General, to seriously investigate these crimes, and prosecute the perpetrators.
