Clashes between Armed Groups and Security Forces

Field Update:

11 March 2007

Executive Force Member Killed and 6 Palestinians Injured in Clashes between the Executive Force and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Beit Hanoun

PCHR’s preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 23:00 on Saturday, 10 March 2007, fierce clashes erupted between members of the Executive Force and Al-Aqasa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah, in Beit Hanoun. Earlier, shots were fired near a training ground for the Executive Force near Omar Bin Abdel Aziz Mosque in the town. Following the shots, the Executive Force went on alert and deployed in the streets, erecting roadblocks near the mosque. The Executive Force stopped a vehicle of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades members. A dispute erupted, and escalated into an exchange of fire. As a result, a member of the Executive Force, Mohammad Hussein El-Kafarna (26) was killed by a bullet to the chest. Six others were injured from both sides, one of them seriously. In addition, two bystanders were injured.

Afterwards, the Executive Force called reinforcements from other areas and controlled Beit Hanoun. They bombarded and burned houses of Fatah members. In addition, they destroyed the Fatah Office in the town, and compounds for Force 17 and the National Security Forces, causing severe material damages.

PCHR is very concerned over these regrettable events that come despite the relative calm of the past few weeks. The Centre calls upon all parties involved to respect the state of calm in the OPT, to resort to dialogue, and to refrain from resorting to arms under any circumstances.
