Election Update No.7
Date: 19 January 2006
Violations of Electoral Campaigns Regulations
Candidate Posters inside Hospitals
PCHR election monitors observed a series of campaign violations relevant to the abuse of public institutions, including hospitals, during campaigning by some candidates. PCHR has documented that supporters of some candidates and parties have put up posters and written campaign graffiti on the walls of Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and Naser Hospital in Khan Yunis.
Article 64.3 in the elections law prohibits hanging campaign posters or banners in any public place, except those allocated for campaigning, as set by the Election Management Committees.
PCHR calls upon all candidates to abide by campaigning regulations, to put an end to violations, and to keep public institutions free of campaigning. Furthermore, the Centre calls upon the Ministry of Health and the administrations of both hospitals to put an end to these campaign violations.
