Violations of Electoral Campaigns Regulations
Fatah Organizes an Electoral Gathering at al-Azhar University
On Sunday, 22 January 2006, Fatah organized an electoral gathering in Shiekh Mohammed 'Awad Hall at al-Azhar University in Gaza City. Flags, candidate posters and the electoral platform of the movement were displayed. A number of Fatah leaders and academics, in addition to a Fatah candidate for the legislative elections, Intissar al-Wazir (Um Jihad), gave speeches relating to the legislative elections and Fatah's policies.
Such activities violate the Elections Law No. 9 of 2005, whose article 64-2 prohibits organizing festivals and holding meetings in mosques, churches or near hospitals, buildings or premises used by governmental or public institutions."
PCHR calls upon the all candidates to stop such activities in public institutions and to comply with the election campaigns regulations. PCHR calls also upon the administrations of al-Azhar University and other universities to stop all activities relating to electoral campaigning at universities.
