Violations of Electoral Campaigns Regulations

Shooting of the Deputy Coordinator of the Third Way's Election Campaign in al-Maghazi

On Friday evening, 20 January 2006, unknown gunmen fired at Suleiman Daoud Abu 'Oshbiya, 24, the deputy coordinator of the election campaign of the Third Way electoral list, in al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza.  He was wounded by 4 live bullets to the feet and a fifth to the right hand.  According to investigations conducted by PCHR, unknown persons called Abu 'Oshbiya on his mobile phone on Friday evening, claiming that they were from Gaza and had campaigning materials for the Third Way electoral list, which he had to obtain from Gaza.  When he left his house in al-Maghazi refugee camp, 5 gunmen stopped him, and one of them fired at him.  He was evacuated to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. 

PCHR strongly condemns this attack and calls for investigation into the crime, in order to bring its perpetrators to justice.  PCHR also calls upon all candidates and their supporters not to employ weapons during the elections campaigns, and to maintain the peaceful nature of the campaigns.
