On
Thursday, 18 October 2007, Raji Sourani (PCHR’s Director) met Rolf M. Hay
Pereira Holmboe (Danish Representative to the Palestinian Authority), Jens
Nauntofte (Senior Foreign Correspondent in the Danish Broadcasting Corporation
News), and Said El Ghandour (Project Engineer for the Danish Project in the
Central Gaza Strip).
The
meeting discussed the human rights situation in the OPT in general and the Gaza
Strip in particular, including the internal Palestinian situation and escalating
Israeli violations against the civilian population. Sourani also highlighted the
most significant effects of the Israeli closure of the Gaza Strip that coincides
with an international embargo on the Strip since January 2006. He stressed that
the civilian population is the party suffering from the closure as a result of
movement restrictions and restrictions on the movement of food, medicines, and
goods.
Earlier, Sourani met Prof. Herta Daubler-Gmelin (Chairwoman of the Committee on
Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the German Parliament), the director of the
Fredrich Numan Foundation, and the director of the Fredrich Ebert Foundation.
The meeting took place in the Fredrich Ebert Foundation office in Gaza City. It
discussed the human rights and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Faisal
Abu Shahla (PLC member and Chair of the Monitoring and Human Rights Committee in
the PLC), Kamal El-Shrafi (Ex-PLC member), Issam Yunis (Director of Al-Mezan
Centre for Human Rights), and Ibrahim Mo’ammar (Director of the National
Association for Democracy and Law) participated in the meeting.
